For the record, I’ve taken several unpaid internships and have been nothing but grateful for the experience and connections I’ve gained.

However, it would have been nice if I hadn’t been scrambling to make ends meet when some of my fellow interns got to do fuck-all because their parents funded their aspirations. Maybe there are many unpaid interns who aren’t trust fund kids, but the fact remains that the internship industrial-complex is skewed towards though with some wealth and financial support to begin with.

I’m doing an unpaid internship this summer. Yes, it’s costing my parents quite a bit of money to send me to live in DC for three months - but it’s an opportunity that I can’t legitimately pass up. My major is stereotypical ‘pre-law’ choice, and I will try to do anything to make my lackluster public education stand out. Hello: state department, governmental connections, resume builder….

However, if i actually had to pay to go go to college, this opportunity would never exist for me, on account of being an immigrant and all. So really… thanks Arizona taxpayers for giving me the ability to get an undergrad education and have money to intern :-)
